Coco de mer is endemic to the Seychelles Islands of Praslinand and Curieuse. Before the Seychelles were actually discovered and settled as well, nuts of this species were many times carried by the ocean currents to distance shores, like those of the Maldives.
In the Maldives is where the tree was unknown. These floating nuts did not germinate. The exceptional size and suggestive form of the nut, the circumstances of it’s discovery, and some unusual quality of the trees have given a huge rise to many legends.
